Summary

In the midst of a humanitarian crisis, this proposed project will result in a documentary incorporating interviews with Ukrainian and Russian immigrants currently live in the U.S. and in Ukraine, an in-depth explanation of the history behind the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, a discussion on possible implications of this current war around the world and how this is a human rights violation. This project will also result in publishing a book focusing on anthropological research on the conflict between Ukraine and Russia while depicting the everyday life of a citizen in Ukraine and how life has changed over time. We are in contact with photojournalists abroad who will supply the photos printed in the book. The goal of this project is to inform people of the catastrophic implications of the war in Ukraine and the history of the conflict from an anthropological point of view.

The escalation of military operations inside Ukraine is leading to escalating human rights violations. We know the common results of war: civilian casualties, people forced to flee, poverty and hunger.  Looking ahead, we will consider worst-case scenarios and will discuss preparations for them. How will we be able to clean up the life-long damage this war will cause people in Ukraine and refugees searching for shelter around the world? Not to mention the economic crisis that is affecting most of the world. Consumer prices are 7.9 percent higher than they were a year ago. And President Biden will call for suspending normal trade relations with Russia, which would raise tariffs for many Russian products.

Background

While Ukrainians are hoping for the best, yet preparing for the worst, the conflict is also seriously affecting the lives of Ukrainian civilians.

This project will include comments from immigrants in the U.S. and people who have experienced the impact firsthand in Ukraine. Vlad Shpilevski used to in Ukraine and was able to seek safety in Poland shortly after the conflict began, “I have been in Kyiv until three weeks ago, but got out. We have many refugees here in South Poland. it is really a bloody war, so we just hope for the better.”

Milena Kovalska, a Ukrainian living in Kharkiv, 30 kilometers from the border described the experience of citizens in the line of fire, “We are not going to run anywhere from our homeland. This is our land, we will fight.” According to Kovalska, Ukrainians are willing to defend their homeland.

According to Olga Panchenko, a Ukrainian immigrant currently living in New York City, though some are taking refuge, others are refusing to evacuate and instead want to stay and fight. “A lot of people are so disillusioned that they not even understand the real danger that they are in,” said Panchenko.

The shift in the political climate and how it will affect Ukraine and other countries across Europe in the following years is a discussion this project will cover in the documentary film. Threatening national security in the U.S. and Europe. This project will also report on the new initiatives being created to support Ukrainian refugees and what the future holds for mitigation efforts.

In order to report on these issues, we ask for being funded, this will enable us to send reporters to the field to investigate and cover these current events and conduct anthropological research on the isuue. Another part of the project will also cover the history of Ukraine and Russia. We need to support a research team that will also consider the consequences of this war and what can be done to mitigate human rights violations in the future. This documentary and book will be extremely valuable to raise awareness about the lives of those affected by this war. Our team strongly believes that the more people know about the lives of others, the more positive relationships transcending borders and cultural conflicts can be formed.

Organization Background

This project will be created by NYC Art Movement, a network bringing artists together to uplift their own work while creating a platform for them to showcase their art in a public setting. This movement has more than 25 artists who actively participate in events in New York City. An event that will take place at the beginning of the project will be hosted in the next few weeks in Manhattan by NYC Art Movement. This event will be an exhibition curated to display visual art from those currently active artists. Visual art that centers around stances on the war in Ukraine. The event will also include performance artists who will perform the message that art can protect democracy. These artists are also currently working on mural art pieces that will be displayed around Manhattan.

NYC Art Movement was founded by David De Hannay, an immigrant Filmmaker, Photographer and Visual artist. He has produced anthology documentary movies about Iran, Afghanistan,Turkey and Israel. David De Hannay started NYC Art Movement to give hope to artists who came close to lose everything due to the pandemic. Now he continues to lead the group in times of humanitarian crisis and political conflicts such as the current war in Ukraine.
